Let's face it - If you're here, then you love to get over. Either you like finding shortcuts to doing stuff or you like free stuff or you just like doing things more efficiently. I fit all those categories, so over time I will add everything that helps me get over to help you get over.
Search Engines
These guys are the butter, and I can't imagine why anyone didn't come
up with the idea sooner. Instead of wandering around entering the same
search string in multiple search engines, these guys will let you enter
it just once and then do all the searching for you. If you are looking
for something out of the ordinary, try reading this article about online
searches from PC World - Find
it on the Web - June 1999
MetaSearch at Highway 61 MetaCrawler
Welcome to Dogpile, the Friendly Multi-Engine...
Email Search - You can
now search for people internetwide
Webferret
- Although this is a downloadable program it has a very small footprint
(848KB) and does a good job of being a multiple-search engine, discarding
duplicate links and generally being very quick.
TroubleShooting
Your best bet is to go to either PCworld
or ZDnet
and do a search on what you're looking for, regardless of whether it's
software or hardware. In addition, here are a couple of other good
sites:
Tech Support - Searchable
index of sites that provide tech assistance
PC Guide - FAQ's of technical
assistance for every component of the PC, and walk-through areas for basic
system maintenance and upkeep.
Hardware/Software
Whatis - A very useful online tech
directory + internet tour guide that among other things gives hints on
keeping spam free.
Computer Discount Warehouse - Before
going to that Radioshack by your house check out the prices here.
Dell-Smooth, fast, efficient -
you can be talking about the skyrocketing stock price or how easy it is
to order a PC online from them. Either way, these guys are going places.
Also, Michael Dell is my hero for being only in his early 30's and a MULTIBILLIONAIRE!
Microsoft - No list would be
complete without big brother Gates.
Learning HTML -
I didn't take classes, didn't have tutors. All the information on how to
build a webpage is right there to people who have half a brain - This would
be a good place to start.
Ipass - Very cool - If your ISP
belongs to this network you can log onto it from abroad, kind of like roaming
via cellphones.
Laptop Lojack - Computer Sentry,
a company that is the equivalent of lojack for Laptops
This page is always under construction!
