Reykjavik – All Star Soccer Resort Tour – (October 1st-
5th)
Details to come…
Subway with Mike D, meeting Alison Ehrmann on the same subway car, Mini-transit train ripoff for $5, meeting everyone else at the ghetto Iceland
counter and being forced to check in bags since this crappy airline only allows
you to carry on something the size of Ken Howe’s unfeasibly tiny head. First stop Duty Free in order to get some
free shots of Ketel One as well as stock up on
liquor, and we ran into Niall who had just lost his phone. Sat with Meridyth/Alison on the flight with
crappy seats and lights not working, worst airline since Iberia but at least
they left on time. Randomly ran into
Chris Andre at the Reykjavik
airport at 5:30 a.m. Played football in
the car-park, checked out the desolate volcanic plains on the way to Reykjavik town. Tried to get some sleep,
then off for the 6 hour tour.
Geysers, Waterfalls, empty volcanic pits, Lynndie
the Viking, extraordinarily expensive food, dueling tectonic plates, Lord of
the Rings type of landscape. Back, then out to the ‘Dubliner’, the usual Irish bar set in any
town in the world. A few drinks sitting
at a booth, followed by a couple of old Swedish ladies who wanted to chat. Out for drinks, dancing, then
back to the hotel to have breakfast at 7am.
Next day ready for football and in reasonably decent
shape. All star team with some
Eleven United (Mark, Tony, Ronan & Niall) and Barnstonworth (Rocco, Gary) players, all quite useful. Semi-decent results, winning 2, drawing 2 and
losing 2, and as always thinking we could have done better in the 15 minute
games. Scored 2, got one assist. Julia Styles came to watch the girls since
she played on Vendeval, but alas couldn’t hang out. Eventually took the bus back, then out to the Dubliner once again. Unfortunately there was to be no meal, which
meant the quick drinking resulted in a quick buzz. More random Swedish girls showing up, going
back to hotel, then finding way to our own hotel. Everyone up as the floor resembled a dorm,
much to the chagrin of all the other guests kept awake by boozing and football
played in the hallway. Some genius
decided it was a good time to go find the heated beach we’d heard about. After a long long
walk, Ali E. marshaled up the lagging group and had us return to the
hotel.
Monday was more mellow,
out to the Blue Lagoon which was quite interesting. Dropped people off at the
airport, then back to the hotel. Relaxed all day at the hotel, recovered more like. Out to an excellent dinner
that surprisingly wasn’t excessively expensive, then off to Nellys
for some drinks with the Maryland
group and to ogle some stunning Icelandic women. Back to hotel by 1am.
Tuesday off to see town but incredibly windy, so
Ali & I sat at a coffee shop and shot the breeze. Met up with Erika, Sean & Phil to go buy
some souvenirs and then off to airport to kill some more time. Ride uneventful, as was taxi back. Nightmare back at apartment as locked myself out within 3 minutes of getting in in order to drop business card at neighbours. Fortunately was able to call sister to come
over with spare set of keys, but fell asleep before seeing the end of the
Yankees win over Minnesota in first game of ALDS.
